MAGNUM LIFTERS R2 ITEMS: rtv, common auto tools, intake gaskets (if needed), roller lifters - Drain coolant, disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine belt. - Remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the leads and the accellerator cable from the throttle body (TB) . Loosen the 4 bolts that retain the TB then remove the assembly and gasket. - Remove the top radiator hose and thermostat housing. - If you have AC, loosen the 3 bolts and the triangular plate that hold down the compressor then disconnect the harness and tie up the unit out of the way , near the fenderwell. The assesories and it's mounting bracket should be removed to gain access to the intake-to-water pump hose, which is underneath all of that. Each truck has different options, mine has then all, so remove items needed to access the shorty hose. This includes the alternator, AC, and the power steering pump (which ties up to the side also) the coil and it's bracket and then the complete assesory mounting bracket which has 7 to 10 different lenth bolts. This will give you good access and only takes an extra hour tops. I then sandblasted the bracket for a clean finish, your call, moving on... - Disconnect the fuel rail, remove the fuel injectors being careful not to lose each injector's 2 O-rings. Tie the rail over to the side out of the way. - Mark your vacuum lines and disconnect them. - Disconnect the EGR fitting at the back of the manifold. - Mark your distibutor wires and remove them from the cap. Scribe a mark on the distributor and the block (install by lining up the marks while at TDC , trust me) then loosen the hold down bolt and disconnect the harness into it, then pull the distributor up and out. - Loosen or disconnect any other wiring or items I might have overlooked then remove the manifold hold down bolts. Pry the manifold up exposing the lifter valley. Remove the lifter's hold down girdle (you'll see it). Sandblasting the intake manifold looks great if you want that clean look. - Remove the valve covers, loosen up the rockers enough to turn them out of the way then pull out the push rods. The lifters can now be removed. Inspect the manifold gaskets for alignment. You will be able to see if the manifold or the heads were aligned correctly. Install the old or preferably new gaskets by cleaning the sealing surfaces then applying gasket sealer in a thin, even coat on the head side of the gaskets. Once they are lined up to the head's ports, scribe the exposed area near the valve covers so when you do set the manifold down, you will be able to tell if the gaskets have slipped down. Once in place, let the gaskets dry to the head side for a while, before installing the intake, decreasing the chances of slipping. After they are dry, apply a thin, even coat of sealer to the intake side of the gaskets. Install the end gaskets then set the intake down carefully, torque the bolts in a cross pattern to 8 to 12 ft/lbs, making sure the gaskets haven't slipped. Install is exactly the opposite of the removal instructions. Timing the motor is easy, pull out #1 spark plug, rotate the crank by breaker bar, have someone see if air is coming out of the cylinder (compression stroke) while the TDC mark is lining up. Drop in the distibutor and wherever the rotor cap lines up to is where the #1 spark plug wire goes then follow the firing order stamped on the intake manifold. Questions?
